Why is silica gel an excellent desiccant?

1. High water absorption
Silica gels are capable of storing up to 40% of their own weight in water. This is facilitated by their strong affinity to dipole molecules, a porous structure, and a large internal surface area.

2. Regenerable
Water molecules are attached to the silicon dioxide by what are known as Van der Waals forces. This physical process is reversible. When silica gel is heated to over 120°C, the water molecules are released again.

3. Non-toxic & chemically inert
Silica gels are non-toxic, chemically inert, and resistant to almost all acids. This makes them suitable for use in the food industry and pharmaceuticals.

4. Color indicator
Silica gels can be provided with a color indicator that changes color to indicate when the maximum water absorption capacity has been reached.

What is the difference between fine-pored and wide-pored silica gels?

Fine-pore silica gels have a pore diameter of 2–4 nm, while wide-pore silica gels have a pore diameter of 6–12 nm. This results in different adsorption properties. Fine-pore types show better adsorption at low humidity levels and are therefore ideal when air needs to be dehumidified in already dry environments. Wide-pore silica gels, on the other hand, show their potential at high humidity levels when a lot of water needs to be absorbed.

Fine Pore

2-4nm pore diameter

Low humidity

Dehumidify already dry air even further

Wide Pore

6-12nm pore diameter

High humidity

Absorb a lot of water in humid air
